Elephant No 97: Feature Artist Ellen Jewett

While looking for images of elephants on bicycles a few days ago, I happened upon the stunning work of Canadian artist Ellen Jewett.

I first discovered the sculpture below, which I coveted in the biggest way. Alas, it was a custom order, and thus already sold.

Then I happened upon these other wonders, and confess myself hooked on some of the most original art I've seen in a long time.

All of her works appear to be custom creations, however, so I may commission something yet. Her bio notes that she took to shaping three-dimensional forms at an early age, and that, for her "sculpting has always been about life, biological narratives and cultural statements." She further describes her work as "equally an expression of art and academic curiosity into the lives of animals and human-animal cultural relationships."

Ellen Jewett has degrees in anthropology and the fine arts and is planning graduate work in anthrozoology while maintaining her studio practice and teaching sculpture. You can see more of her work on her website here.

Elephant Lore of the Day
In keeping with the fantasy theme of today's art, here's a fun elephant fantasy video originally sent to me by my cousin Bobby Russell—DJ extraordinaire in Sedona, Arizona.
