Elephant No. 133: From the Archives: Playing Card




It's the weekend, and I'm taking it easy, so here is one of the early postings from the original Elephant a Day blog. Enjoy!

Today I felt like doing something quiet and sedentary, so I decided to make a traditional playing card.

Playing cards were invented in Ancient China around the ninth century A.D. By the eleventh century, they could be found throughout Asia, likely transported along the Silk Road. Ancient Chinese "money cards" had four suits: coins, strings of coins, myriads (10,000) of coins, and tens of myriads. Some scholars believe that the first playing cards in China might have been a form of actual currency.

Playing cards came to Europe in the late fourteenth century, probably from Mameluke Egypt. The Egyptian deck had 52 cards, with four suits: polo sticks, coins, swords and cups. Each suit had ten number cards, featuring "pips" or suit symbols. There were also three "court" cards: King, Deputy King and Under-Deputy.

The Egyptian deck may have influenced the design of East Indian cards, although some suggest that it might have been the other way around. Early Indian cards are quite distinctive: they are circular, intricately hand-painted, and have anywhere from eight to thirty-two suits.

By the late fourteenth century, the use of playing cards had spread across Europe. The earliest cards were individually handmade and expensive; however, by the fifteenth century, decks printed from woodcuts had begun to appear. Most early woodcuts were coloured after printing, either by hand or using a stencil. A deck usually had four suits, although five suits were also common. In Germany, the suits were hearts, bells, leaves and acorns. Italian and Spanish cards used swords, wands, cups and coins.

The four suits most commonly used today—hearts, spades, diamonds and clubs—originated in France around 1480. The club (trèfle, or clover, in French) was likely derived from the acorn on German cards; the spade, from the German leaf. Europeans also changed the court cards to represent European royalty: originally with King, Knight and Knave, and later with King, Queen and Jack.

At first, the King was always the highest card. As time went on, the Ace took on greater significance, eventually becoming the card with the greatest value. Some have suggested that this concept was given a boost during the French Revolution, when the peasantry wrested power from the monarchy. 

Court cards with mirror images were invented in the late eighteenth century. This was so that players would not be tempted to turn the court cards right side up, which might hint at the cards they held. The use of the manufacturer's logo on the ace of spades began during the reign of James I of England (1556–1625), who passed a law requiring an insignia to show that duty had been paid on the cards. Duty was paid on playing cards in the United Kingdom until 1960.

The most common size for playing cards is 2-1/2 x 3-1/2 inches (poker size) or 2-1/4 x 3-1/2 inches (bridge size). Traditionally, the Jack of Spades, Jack of Hearts, and King of Diamonds are drawn in profile—these are the "one-eyed" cards. The rest of the court cards are depicted full-face. The King of Hearts is the only King with no mustache, and is also typically shown with a sword his head, making him look as though he's stabbing himself.

For today's elephant, I decided to make a standard poker-sized card, based on the King of Hearts from the Bicycle Playing Card deck.




To start, I traced around one of the Bicycle cards. Expecting that I would screw up at least once, I made four blanks, all from inexpensive bristol board.




In order to create a mirror image of the Elephant King of Hearts, I drew a line across the middle of the card, then sketched in the elephant. Although I used the general idea of the King of Hearts from the Bicycle deck, I decided not to have the elephant stabbing himself in the head with a sword. Although the King of Hearts may traditionally be nicknamed the "suicide king", I didn't want a suicide elephant.




Drawing a mirror image freehand is actually more difficult than you'd think. Short of making a grid (which I knew I would greatly dislike), there's no easy way of doing this. What worked best for me was to draw a bit of the design on one half, then flip it around and draw as close to the same thing as possible on the other half. I guess I was hoping my fingers would have some sort of memory of what they'd just done. It wasn't always as precise as I would have liked, but it came out close enough.

I wanted something on the back as well, but the Bicycle Poker Card design is beyond what I can do on such a small surface with a limited amount of time. I did another mirror design with a few nods to the idea behind the Bicycle design, but it's nowhere near as detailed as the card that inspired it.




I had originally planned to use drafting pens for this. I had blue, red and black drafting ink on hand, and planned to fill the yellow in with coloured pencil afterwards. Unfortunately, the blue ink was old and not very cooperative, so after a few attempts with ink, I went with coloured pencil instead.

I wanted to stick more or less with the same colours as are on the Bicycle cards, so that's the colour palette I used.




I didn't get quite the crisp result I expected, but I certainly learned a lot about drawing mirror images. And old ink. And the propensity of coloured pencil to smudge. And how you can't erase lead pencil after you've put coloured pencil in the same vicinity.

It was definitely an interesting exercise. Just don't expect a pack of Elephant Poker Cards anytime soon.





Elephant Lore of the Day
In the French playing cards on which most modern decks are based, the King of Hearts is said to depict Charlemagne, Emperor of the Franks.

In A.D. 802, Charlemagne received an Asian elephant named Abul-Abbas from the Caliph of Baghdad. Abul-Abbas was brought from Baghdad by a man called Isaac, who had been sent to the Caliph on Charlemagne's orders. Following the deaths of the two other emissaries sent to Baghdad with him, Isaac returned alone with the elephant. The journey took many months: first by land along the Egyptian coast and across modern Algeria and Tunisia, then by sea from Tunisia to Europe.

Abul-Abbas was a big hit in his new home, and was exhibited many times at court. He was eventually housed in Augsburg, in today's southern Bavaria. Sadly, Abul-Abbas died of pneumonia when he was in his forties, likely from swimming in the Rhine. His bones were preserved at Lippenham, Denmark until the eighteenth century.

Some say that Abul-Abbas was an albino elephant. Legend also suggests that he was used as a war elephant in A.D. 804, when the Franks were attacked by the Danes. Mobilizing his troops, Charlemagne is said to have asked that Abul-Abbas be sent to him, so that the elephant could take part in the battle.

Elephant No. 125: Doorstep Surprise Elephant




This little guy showed up anonymously on my doorstep this morning. He was huddled against the doorframe, undoubtedly trying to stay warm on a miserably damp, cold day.





I love elephants, and I love containers, so this was a lovely treat. I have no idea who it's from, but it was a fantastic surprise, and made my day. Thank you, whoever you are!

Elephant No. 122: Clothespin Critters





Although I've painted clothes-peg elephants and once tried (unsuccessfully) to make an elephant by attaching spring-loaded clothespins to one another, I like this version of clothespin art much better.

I was reminded of this idea in Martha Stewart's Favorite Crafts for Kids, but I'd seen it before. The concept involves simply folding a piece of paper in half, cutting out an animal shape (keeping the fold intact), decorating both sides, then clipping on clothespins for legs. I had two kinds of wooden clothespins, so I decided to make an elephant using each.




The first thing I did was gauge the size of elephant I could make using each type of clothespin. The only thing you need to do after this is draw an elephant shape (without its legs, of course) and colour it in any way you like. To make the elephants sturdy enough to avoid flopping over, I used artist-quality bristol board.




I made these two. Usually the instructions say to colour both sides of the design, but I only had time to do one side of each. I used permanent markers in various colours, just for fun.





Once the designs were done, I cut them out and clipped the clothespins to the bottom. Most sources use only two clothespins, even for four-legged animals. I decided the elephants looked better with four.





I like the fact that I have a big elephant and a little elephant, and I like the highly unrealistic colours. Best of all, this was really simple, and would be a great activity for young children.





Elephant Lore of the Day
In 1886, James A. Byrne was commissioned by the Denver Soap Company to sculpt what was surely the largest bar of soap ever made.

Using 7,000 pounds of Denver Best Soap, Byrne created a life-sized elephant as the centrepiece of an exhibition promoting Colorado industry. As the Rocky Mountain News described the elephant:
[It] is a very perfect model and represents an elephant of unusually large size. The ears, trunk, tusks, sides, legs and feet are all wonderfully like those of the [animal]. The expression of the eye and the general contour of the forehead and head is excellent.
There is little other information on whether it was an Asian or African elephant, nor how large it actually was. The trading card below commemorates the elephant, but hopefully it looked better than this.

The elephant cost a total of $300, which in today's dollars is equivalent to about $7,410.

Elephant No 115: From the Archives—The Disappearing Elephant





Every so often, I need a break from daily blogging. Rather than avoid posting altogether, however, I decided to re-post a fun project from my original Elephant a Day blog. Enjoy!


Today's elephant is based on a vintage optical illusion, colloquially called "The Disappearing Chinaman", invented by Sam Lloyd. First printed in 1896, the puzzle was revived in 1930 by Lloyd's son, Sam Lloyd, Jr.

The idea of this vanishing puzzle is simple in concept, but devilishly difficult to figure out at first glance. The puzzle involves a disc overlaying a larger scene. When the disc is rotated from NE to NW, it appears to make one of the small figures disappear. There are 13 figures when you start, and only 12 when the disc is rotated.

I had one of these in a box of reproduction vintage optical puzzles and illusions, so I used it to inspire today's elephant. For an explanation of the original puzzle, as well as a downloadable version you can assemble yourself, click here.

I started by drawing a circle. Next, I drew a box measuring 12.5 x 17.5 cm (5 x 7 inches), to serve as the base. I then cut out both pieces, and linked them together with a small brad that allows them to freely rotate. I also drew the arrow that points to NE, and lines for both NE and NW.




Now came the part that was hard for me to wrap my mind around. Lining up one set of these lines, I began drawing elephants, overlapping them in various ways. The idea is to make it possible for adjacent elephants to line up in order to create a new elephant. One of them will need to be a "double" elephant to allow one of them to disappear when the disc is rotated.

This part literally took me hours. I played with the original puzzle, trying to figure out which figure disappears, and how to pose my elephants to make this happen. At first, it seemed easy: just make adjacent elephants work together. The problem arises when you get to the end of this process, and find that nothing matches. You end up with legs in the middle of nowhere, and no elephant with which to match them.

I tried elephants with all their legs facing into the middle. The bodies were outside the disc, and the legs were on the disc. I thought it might work if I made one set of four legs into two sets of two legs. While that works, it doesn't make anything disappear.

Next I tried circus elephants doing various things, with legs and arms all over the place. I ended up with the same problem: the elephants worked with their neighbours, but nothing disappeared.

I went back to the legs in the middle and bodies outside the disc. I actually thought I had it figured out, but discovered—just as I was about to ink everything in—that I again had elephants that worked with their neighbours, but no disappearing elephant.

In desperation, I referred to the original puzzle, and started drawing elephants in similar poses. I still ran into difficulties making some of the elephants match up, but I did finally make one of them disappear. From twelve elephants when the arrow points to NE, it dropped to eleven elephants when I moved the arrow to NW.




I still can't really explain how it works, and I'd never be able to reproduce this in different poses. But after three hours of drawing and erasing a dozen elephants, I was just happy it worked.

I inked everything in, and heat-set it with a hairdryer. I then painted everything with gouache.






When everything was dry, I assembled it and tested it again to be sure it worked. It did.

Now that I know how to do this, I would be willing to redraw one exactly like this. But I'd never attempt adding extra elephants, and if anyone were to ask me how it works, I'd still have to say that I don't have a clue.






Elephant Lore of the Day
In early 2012, Cameroon was the site of one of the worst poaching episodes in recent memory. Within the space of a few hours, over 200 elephants were killed at Bouba N’Djida National Park in the northeastern part of the country. This is a full 50% of the elephants in the region, and it is suspected that poachers have moved into Cameroon as the next frontier, having already wiped out elephant populations in nearby Chad and the Central African Republic.

Over the past ten years, elephants have been disappearing at an astonishing rate. A passion for ivory in the Far East—and a growing ability to afford it—is driving demand for elephant tusks in every part of the world. Where people once saw the occasional poacher picking off an elephant or two, there are now well-equipped marauders in jeeps and helicopters, armed with high-powered rifles.

Not content with killing elephants, in some parts of Africa they have also taken to murdering those whose job it is to protect dwindling wildlife populations. Nor do they limit themselves to rifles. Some poachers simply lob grenades into herds of elephants, or leave out poison-laced fruit. In some parts of Africa, the illicit trade in ivory is even believed responsible for supporting military forces, including as the disgraced Joseph Kony's rebel army in Uganda, and warlords in Somalia.

Poaching appears to be driven primarily from outside Africa. Many of the most recent arrests for ivory poaching have been of Chinese middlemen, caught with large shipments of African ivory. According to several sources, the number of Chinese nationals now operating in Africa's illicit ivory trade is growing, with no end in sight. Nor are elephants the only animals affected. In 2011, more than 400 rhinos were killed in South Africa for their horns, which are used in traditional Chinese medicine.

Africa is not alone. A number of elephant populations in Asia are also seriously endangered. At least one country's elephants are about to become extinct. Much of this is also due to poaching, although habitat loss is a significant factor in Asia as well.

This is not to say that no one cares. There are dedicated conservationists in China, Thailand, India, Sri Lanka, and even countries with tiny populations of elephants such as Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. The same is true of Africa, where wildlife rangers and national military forces often put their lives on the line to protect elephants from the activities of poachers and even irate farmers.

A number of solutions have been proposed to try and stem the tide of illicit killing for the sake of ivory. Some say that worldwide stockpiles of ivory should be released onto the open market. This would likely cause a precipitous drop in price, and make poaching less profitable. Others say that more money should be put into elephant protection, forensic tracking of ivory, and more severe penalties for the perpetrators.

There are arguments to be made for all of these. However, I don't think anything will stop the killing of elephants—whether for their ivory, or because they've trampled a farmer's corn—unless and until human beings stop seeing elephants as disposable vermin, and start seeing them for the intelligent, sensitive creatures they are.

Elephant No. 111: Solar-Powered Robot Elephant





I came across this strange little kit in the dollar store last week, and thought I might be able to adapt it to make an elephant. I am anything but mechanical, but I was game to try. It was only three dollars, so I didn't really care if it was a bust.




This is what the kit comes with.




The instructions have really small diagrams and very little explanation, so I found just looking at them a bit daunting. I can put an IKEA anything together without instructions, but wires and stuff intimidate me.

I began by putting together the "gear box" followed by the "solar module". It was very straightforward until I got to the part about attaching the wire leads. I'm used to serious wiring with either soldering or wire connectors, so I couldn't figure it out at all. I took a magnifying glass to the diagrams, but it didn't help. Finally I realized that the wires simply get slotted into the coils of the springs. Seems like a very insecure electrical connection to me, but what do I know about solar-powered dollar-store robots?










I decided to follow the instructions for "Solar Puppy". It was the one that looked the most like an elephant (i.e., it had a head and four legs), and when I bought the kit, I had noted places where I could add foam pieces to make it look more elephantine.

I began by assembling Solar Puppy.




To transform it onto an elephant, I took a pack of craft foam from the dollar store, and cut out a pair of ears and a trunk.




I slotted the ears into the sides of the solar module, making a little fold in the middle so that I could make them curve forward or back—or both, in this case.




I glued the trunk to the front with a strip of double-sided glue tape.




I also cut and attached a pair of tusks.




Because elephant tails are not as fat as the tail for Solar Puppy, I cut another piece of foam, poked a hole in it,  and attached it in place of the plastic piece.




I finished it by adding a crown of gold glitter foam—because elephants should wear crowns if they possibly can—and a couple of brown foam dots for eyes.





Because this is solar, of course, it needed sunlight before it would work. I stuck it in a sunny window (well, as sunny as it can be on a wintry Ottawa day) for about an hour. And then another hour. It's clearly not the most sensitive solar panel in the world.

There's no on/off switch, so if you put it in a window, put it somewhere it won't fall off when it begins to move.

It doesn't do much other than spin its tail around, and even that was rather underwhelming. But it was simple to make (once I figured out the wiring), and in the end, it's weirdly cute.

In many areas where elephants roam free, farmers often erect electric fencing to keep animals away from crops and settlements. Sadly, electric fencing often electrocutes wildlife, killing everything from lions and tigers to large animals such as rhinos and elephants.

Enter solar fencing. Unlike electric fences, which use high voltage, solar fencing gives animals a brief but harmless shock. Instead of killing or incapacitating an elephant or tiger, solar fencing teaches them to stay away through gentle negative reinforcement.

One of the most interesting uses of solar power in relation to elephants, however, is a research project in Namibia, powered entirely by the sun. Working at the Mushara waterhole in a remote corner of Etosha National Park, a team from Stanford University runs everything from cameras to fencing with the power of the sun.

Because there are no generators, vehicles or tourists, the team is able to quietly observe elephants and other wild animals at close quarters. Still and video cameras run on solar batteries, as does digital editing equipment. Solar panels power speakers that send low-frequency sounds to attract elephants. The panels also provide enough electricity to run a makeshift laboratory, as well as two refrigerators stocked with fresh meat, dairy products and beer.

And, to keep wildlife from wandering into the camp, researchers installed a solar-powered electric fence. Like other solar wildlife fences, the fencing gives animals a short, harmless shock to scare them away. As researcher Tim Rodwell said, "A lion tried to touch the fence in the far corner. He only tried it once."
